Got any other suggestions?

I hope I get as much reading done before the finals frenzy begins :/

Impressive list..
Two books I like are The English by Jeremy Paxman and Griffith and Sabine Trilogy by Nick Bantock.
They are totally unrelated books. The first one is probably more to the taste of MJ.. The second one is 3 books that are actually works of art and are in the forms of actually letters and postcards between Grifith and Sabine.. Two that later become lovers but are they? They never meet. Do they really exist?
Truly fantastic. If anyone has read G&S then please tell me what u think because I do not know what to think of the ending!
am I allowed to comment on this?
You don't have much choice anyways.
Memoirs of a Geisha is GREAT! You just know things about a culture that no longer exist and in a very interesting way. What I don't like in the book is that when you are reading it you feel for people who are to doing bad stuff.
Cane River IS a must read, it makes you feel that no matter what you go through is life, other people went through much more.
In the name of Identity... you ARE going to give that book today, hope you finished it. and I really like the parts that I read; didn't stop talking about it yesterday and my sister was about to shoot me. :D
A Bibleography of Scholars in Medieval Islam... That will always be a side read and I never read it, and don't think I will ever.
The Alchemist... no comments.
I know This much is True is a really really good novel! (It's the one about the twins, right?)
and you are not going to read 'The other Bolyen Girl'?
and I hope you will have the time to read all that before the finals.
I go to my classes after the vacation and my professors are bombarding us with work. bastards! I forgot before the finals frenzy, there is the PROJECT FRENZY.
meh. :/
I looked at the title of THE ENGLISH, and i thought to myself, why would i read a book about the english? Then i actually clicked on the title, and read the back flap. Uh who is Jeremy Paxman? (I don't know anything about the english. sorry.) So i read the excerpt and the first thing i see is 'If you ask any man what nationality he'd want to be 99% out of a 100 would want to be an englishmen' You're kidding right? :/
I clicked on the other book, and it looks really intresting.I love the artwork!!
so yea, i'm going for Griffith and Sabine Trilogy. :)
oh. and Rebecca! you have to read that too!!
btw, did you read any Shakespeare? and what do you think?
(someone is saying it's so good that I have to read it. something about it being true love and such :S)
yea i read some of Shakespeare's work. I like alot of his poetry. There are wayy too many to name.
From his plays:
I loved Macbeth, Hamlet, Julius Ceaser,A Midsummer Nights Dream and of course Romeo and Juliet. I have Othello but i never had a chance to read it.
What is Rebecca? And why should i or MUST i read it?
>>>(someone is saying it's so good that I have to read it. something about it being true love and such :S)<<<
He doesn't always write about that, and I like his more serious works about ambition and the fall of a character from a high position to a low one, and how every person has this one faulty trait and so forth.
Don't always go for the sappy stuff. sheesh.
i think this is probably one of the most educated and cultured comments page i've read! very good stuff!
i don't know if i can compete with both of you... i know Shakespeare said "to be or not to be" but that's super-stretching it!
oh yeah.. to Biz.. That book about the English.. it's hilarious because it's written by an Englishman and he makes fun of the English. It's very well written. Jeremy Paxman is the presenter of University Challenge and he presents Newsnight on BBC. Famous guy in media.
I've written before about that book in here.
Griffith and Sabine is a different kind of book. it's Art.. it takes you to a different world.
I love art!!
haha of course coming from an arab family, art is something you study on the side, you don't major in the 'arts'. This is how most typical arabs think:
My dad told my orthodontist (when i had braces) that i was studying pre-med and was explaining how i loved art. My dentist and my dad go into this indepth discussion on how i should be a dentist because of all the so called 'artwork' they do in drawing and molding teeth. ugh! I of course couldn't say anything because i was sitting on the chair with my mouth stretched out in screeching pain as my dentist tightens my braces.
So basically, the message to me was, Go dentistry, thats the closest you'll ever get to an 'artistic profession'.
haha. No!
"To be or not to be" is from Hamlet. hehe.
GO READ! :)
After you asked the question about 'why must I read REbecca!' I went to my room to take a nap and then read the book but turned out my nap is a 15 hours one. :D so now you will have to do with Amazon. go check it there, gosh.
and I like sappy stuff. ;)
Since you liked P&P and other Classics, Rebecca reminds me of them. It is a mustery too, and you never know the herions name!
Just read the first chapter and you will know why I think you should read it.
Buj,
I have never read anything by Shakespear because I always had the idea that it's boring and that I won't understand anything, I think I got the idea from an English teacher in school.
I will try to read something in the near future, maybe you should too.
Wait wait wait, you both haven't read ROMEO AND JULIET?!
come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!
haha well i guess thats the first thing you should read.
You may not understand most of it, so take along sparknotes or a reading guide. I'm just saying this because its in Shakespearen English, even native speakers must be taught this,so you really understand everything.
MJ-you can ask that professor i had last semester to explain some things if you didn't understand.
:) He's cool.
to read it or not to read it, that's the question.
I'm going to start reading it tonight, and God help me.
If I didn't come to uni tomorrow, you will know why at least. :)
dork.
I just watched mansfield park. I think i liked the movie more than the book. lmao.
The same with Emma. Talk about slow read, the movie was wayy better.
biz,
lol@the orthodontist scene from your past.
good stuff.. and i agree with the arab way of doing things ie how you can use art to make good dental models.. ugh.. sorry but that's an obnoxious thing to say! like we say in arabic "sho dakhal jari bi 7maari?" (what's the connection between my neighbour and my donkey?). there is no connection!
thanks for the hamlet info.. i actually remember it very well.. i did an igcse in it.. as well as macbeth.. good stuff.. i even saw taming of the shrew in the cultural centre (by the british shakespeare company) in sharjah (near the big koran roundabout) about 10 yrs ago.. hmmm age is catching up with me... as for layla wa qays (romeo and juliet) i haven't read that one yet.. should do really..
when do finals end? good luck.
Isn't it qays wa layla?
haha lmao at layla wal majnoon. My mother use to tell me these stories when I was younger.
Mansfield park is a good book and the movie is one of my favourite. Maybe if you stopped 'skimming' through books you will like them more.
Emma is nice too! both movie AND book.
Finals end in january but start in 2 weeks. #@@$#@#$W.
akhhh i hate wednesday classes.
and i was wondering last night how much money have i spent on coffee this semester?
I mean sometimes i go through 2 or 3 cups of coffee. Thank god its DUNKIN DOUGHNUTS and not Starbucks.
That would have been such a money sink. On weekends alone i spend like 60+ dhms on coffee at Starbucks.
we just spent the last 30 mins discussing this. Everyone present agreed that mansfield park and emma were boring and slow reads. Emma took forever to get to the point.
And Majority ruled that the movies were wayyy better than the books. Lmao. so shush!
but your opinion is always welcome MJ. :)
Everyone present agreed!
Everyone except Mary agreed. and since Mary is no one, then it's not important.
I'm sick. and pissed off at the world.
Have fun.
yaow!
cheer up!!
MJ.. yeah cheer up.. coz I know someone that knows where your B3eers are :P
I just busted out laughing infront of the computer at the 'I know someone that knows where your B3eers are :P'
btw, I was pissed of at something that has NOTHING to do with this.
lol u meant that u burst out laughing.. busting out laughing is probably not much fun, hehe
hey, were's my backup?.. my B3eers-Team....
yes i know where MJ's b3eers are. I know every place they are situated in the UAE. bwhahaahah!!
Muhahahaha
B3EER-POWER
Biz! remember I know where your B3eers and Babies are.
and Buj! I know where you live!!
ok lets clarify something, I have no babies or b3eers. So :p
But your B3eers shall die. I'm sorry.
oh then we have to clarify something, I don't have B3eers either!
I have a parrot, and you won't dare touch him because he is my dad's favourite child. :P
... and he bites people who don't share food with him. so i guess he will bite you if you tried to hurt him.
you parrot loves me and you know it!
*ignores Biz*
yea, thats what i thought!
and how can you not have b3eers? I know someone in your family must have them! You can't fool me. And you call yourself EMIRATY?!
Who said I'm Emiraty? :P
dork.
Chub!
